One of the liveliest and most welcoming events on the calendar at this year’s Madrona Fest will unfold at 2:00 PM, for the Contra Dance.
Following music workshops at noon and an Old Time Jam at 1:00 PM, this midafternoon highlight invites everyone, from seasoned dancers to first-timers, to join in the fun.
Contra dancing is an American folk tradition that’s all about community. Danced to live music and guided by a “caller,” it’s designed so anyone can jump right in, even if they’ve never danced before. The caller teaches each sequence before the music begins, walking everyone through the steps at an easy pace.
Once the band starts playing, the caller keeps things flowing until the crowd gets the hang of it—then lets the dancers take over. The moves are simple, usually just walking to the beat, and the focus is on connecting with others, not perfecting fancy footwork.

Adding to the excitement, the live music will be provided by the Flamin’ Fingers String Band, an old-time ensemble based out of Home, Washington, on the Key Peninsula. Their lively fiddles and rhythmic drive make them a local favorite, and their music will fill the festival grounds with the unmistakable sound of tradition and joy.

The afternoon continues with a Local Photography Contest at 3:30 PM and the Evening Concert at 4:00 PM, but for many, the Contra Dance may be the highlight—a moment where strangers become friends, children dance alongside elders, and Madrona Fest celebrates what community truly means: coming together in rhythm, laughter, and shared joy.
